Rheumatology & Autoimmune Diseases Club (RAC)

Summary :
	RAC was established in March 2001 by the collaboration of the internal medicine physicians specialized in rheumatology & clinical immunology in Cairo, Ain Shams & AlAzhar universities in addition to El Maadi Armed Forces Hospital. Rheumatology departments of the National Center for Research & Alexandria university joined the club at a later stage. The aim of the club is to promote scientific collaboration between Egyptian internal medicine Rheumatologists in both clinical & research directions. Also, to encourage internal medicine physicians to specialize in rheumatology as it is believed that vast experience in internal medicine is an essential prerequisite of a good rheumatologist. This is the rule all over the world because of the multisystem nature of most of the rheumatic & autoimmune diseases. RAC members believe that this is the only way to achieve international standards of rheumatology practice in Egypt. It was agreed that RAC moderator will serve for only one year. Professor Kamel Heshmat Gado of Cairo university was elected by the founding committee for the position of RAC moderator for the first year (2001/2002). Professor Mohammad Salah Abdel Baki of Ain Shams university has been elected for the second year (2002/2003). Dr Mohammad Hassan of El Maadi Armed Forces Hospital was appointed for the position of RAC executive secretary for the first 2 years. It was decided to hold quarterly scientific theoretical & clinical meetings. Clinical meetings aim at presenting difficult or rare case in rheumatoplogy while theoretical meetings review up to date knowledge of different rheumatological topics. Four theoretical & 3 clinical meetings were held in the period from March 2001 to May 2002.
